When researchers led by Masako Tada (Institute for Fronteir Medical Sciences; Kyoto, Japan) successfully fused embryonic and somatic cells to yield product cells capable of expressing pluripotency-related genes, the race to reprogram human somatic cells was kick-started. Subsequently, significant progress in the fields of stem cell research and regenerative medicine has been made.
