Within the realm of regenerative medicine bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) have shown promise in cutaneous wound and joint repair. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells from bone marrow are thought to assist in wound healing through the secretion of factors that encourage tissue growth, cell migration, and angiogenesis. Continued progress for BM-MSCs in wound healing and regenerative medicine requires a better understanding of the mechanisms, both direct and paracrine, utilized by these cells to facilitate repair. In addition, a clear consensus is needed surrounding the methods and markers that the field is using to define mesenchymal stem cells and characterize their functional capacity.
