New research looks at the remodeling capacity of MSCs following acute lung injury

Pre-clinical evidence concerning the utility of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to aid the treatment of acute lung injury (ALI) has been mounting over recent years, with some clinical trials beginning to run.

New research has attempted to clarify this effect, utilizing a mouse model with LPS-induced ALI. MSCs were shown to increase levels of IL-10 and decrease that of TNF-α. Furthermore, MPO gene expression was increased. In this vein, MSCs were able to reduce neutrophilic infiltration and edema.

Immunohistochemistry also demonstrated that MSCs were able to repopulate the lung tissue with alveolar type I cells. The researchers conclude that this could be owing to the bone marrow-derived MSCs being able to act as progenitor cells, similar to alveolar epithelial type II cells.
