The likely role of proteolytic enzymes in unwanted differentiation of stem cells in culture
Vanessa Penna et al. from the Federal University of Sao Paulo and CTCmol look at the use of proteolytic enzymes in cell culture and tissue engineering
In this free-to-read review in Future Science OA, Penna et al. examine the possible mechanisms of cellular change that might occur owing to the use of proteolytic enzymes in cell culture. They conclude that the use of proteolytic enzymes needs to be reassessed to ensure clinical safety, and highlight cell sheets and hydrogel 3D culture as possible alternatives.
