A longstanding debate in biomedicine, the use of animals in research attracts many to both sides of the argument. In a free-to-read opinion piece in Future Science OA titled 'Animal models are essential to biological research: issues and perspectives', Nobel Laureate Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and Xavier Montagutelli, of the Animalerie Centrale at Institut Pasteur (France), discuss where we stand, highlighting that animal research remains essential at the current time, and giving an overview of the status of attempts in Europe to protect animals used in research.
