Outreach and engagement occupy ends of a spectrum as forms of public participation. Most scientists agree that outreach and engagement are important, and most participate at least occasionally. A wide array of tools can and should be utilized for effective outreach and engagement. Risks and challenges are present and manageable. Along with other scientists, stem cell scientists and their institutions have an obligation to ensure that their work proceeds in parallel with robust outreach and engagement efforts. Social media-based tools can be valuable for discharging these duties.
