Professor Dame Julia Polak (Imperial College London), the pioneer and champion of tissue engineering, died peacefully in her sleep on Monday 11th August 2014.

Dame Julia served on the "Regenerative Medicine" Editorial Board since the journal's inception in 2006. Her contributions, expert advice and most importantly her robust support over the years have been invaluable to the success of the journal.

The Regenerative Medicine team is saddened by the loss of Professor Dame Julia Polak. She was a great contributor to the journal and to the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine communities worldwide. It was an honour having her as one of our most invaluable Editorial board members. Our thoughts are with her colleagues, family and friends.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dame Julia. I will always remember her warmly and feel lucky that I had the pleasure of working with her and knowing her. What an amazing person she was and what a remarkable life she had.
