Regenerative medicine: integrate or separate?

Regenerative medicine is a multidisciplinary field: therefore, should it be its own distinct department or integrated into other departments?

As a field, regenerative medicine encompasses many different areas of science and medicine, including cell therapy, gene therapy, nanomedicine, biochemical engineering, and so on. Therefore, is it better for the development of this field it to be integrated within other departments, or should it stand alone?

The UK Regenerative Medicine Platform (UKRMP) has different hubs integrating stem cell and regenerative medicine experts with immunologists and biochemical engineers, pharmacologists etc — is this the way forward? Should we encourage more individual regenerative medicine faculties and centers, or the collaboration between units focusing on individual components such as cell therapy?
