The biopharmaceutical industry is currently being presented with opportunities to improve research and business efficiency via the automation and integration of various systems. This approach has already shown promise in the arena of compound screening, but has a much broader potential to streamline the process beyond the stage of lead generation.

In this perspective, originally published in Pharmacogenomics, a team from Johnson & Johnson (NJ, USA) explore how combining automation and bioinformatics could be applied to biopharmaceutical manufacturing and bioprocessing.

Figure 1: 'Integrative functional informatics' is based on the convergence and integration of bioinformatics, automation, genomics and proteomics technologies. Automation of data analysis and assays flow enables the generation of a feedback-based integrated system.
