Optimization of protocol design: a path to efficient, lower cost clinical trial execution
The latest article from Future Science OA sees Marina Malikova review the challenges faced by clinical teams when planning clinical trials, and provides a methodology to ensure cost and efficacy are maintained.
With clinical trials increasing in complexity and duration, we are seeing rising costs. It is therefore becoming increasingly important that trials are planned effectively to ensure efficacy whilst restraining cost.
In this article Marina Malikova, from Boston University, reviews the challenges currently facing those planning clinical trials, and describes a possible methodology for the planning phase, providing a comprehensive scoring system with multiple complexity assessment parameters common for the major therapeutic indications. The aim is that this could be utilized to assess study protocol designs of different phases for various clinical trials, throughout multiple phases of project's life cycle. It is hoped that this could lead to effective staff management, procedure and protocol adherence and resource allocation, and mitigate cost risks.
