New method for producing synthetic skin has just one step

Researchers from Pohang University have developed a single step process for producing 3D synthetic skin that could be used for surgery and wound healing. In a paper recently published in the journal Biofabrication, a team from Pohang University (South Korea) describes a single step method for creating 3D structured synthetic skin. This faster, cheaper method utilizes a hybrid 3D printer combining extrusion and inkjet print heads in one unit. The extrusion head prints a collagen-based scaffold with a polycaprolactone (PCL) membrane onto which keratinocytes are uniformly distributed by the inkjet head.
