A £55-million, large-scale Cell Therapy Catapult GMP manufacturing center is to be built in Stevenage, UK

Stevenage Borough Council to has granted The Cell Therapy Catapult planning permission to construct a £55-million, 7200-m2 GMP manufacturing center, with opening planned for 2017.

The manufacturing center’s purpose will be to manufacture cell and gene therapy products for late-phase clinical trials and commercial supply. The CEO of The Cell Therapy Catapult, Keith Thompson, stated: “I am delighted that Stevenage Borough Council has granted permission to create a center that will advance the industry into becoming a world leader in advanced therapy development and commercialisation. The large-scale GMP manufacturing center will provide global scientific and medical communities with the assistance they need to turn research into products that have the potential to address many unmet medical needs.”

Manufacturing and supply chain were highlighted as roadblocks to the progression of research into commercially viable products the Cell Therapy Catapult’s 2013 survey of the UK’s manufacturing capability. This facility will help to further boost the UK’s GMP capabilities, which have already been reported as having increased in the last year.
