Costa J, Silva-Correia J, Reis R, Oliveira JM | Journal of 3D Printing in Medicine, 5(3) (2021) Keywords: 3D bioprinting • artificial intelligence • bioengineering • biofabrication • deep learning This review article explores the potential of applying deep learning to bioengineering and discusses how the synergy of this technology with biofabrication could help to more efficiently bring 3D bioprinting to clinics. Specifically, it is suggested that deep learning could allow more streamlined workflows in bioengineering and biofabrication and open up new opportunities particularly for 3D bioprinting approaches. The authors do, however, caution that the combination of deep learning and bioengineering is in its embryonic phase and its implantation requires readaptation of current 3D bioprinting systems. Notably, the gathering of training datasets and the definition of rigorous evaluation criteria of 3D bioprinting parameters are...
