Novel target identified for hypoplastic left heart syndrome therapy

Researchers from the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (OH, USA) have identified a therapeutic target that may promote heart cell regeneration in patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). The research was recently published in the journal Cell Stem Cell. HLHS, a complex congenital heart disease, occurs when the left side of the heart is critically underdeveloped. Children born with this disease are unable to efficiently pump blood around the body, and treatment options are limited to heart surgeries or even a heart transplant.
