Researchers bioprint a functional heart with human cells

A team of researchers from the University of Minnesota (MN, USA) has reported success in the bioprinting of a ‘human heart pump’ organoid in the laboratory. Researchers from the University of Minnesota have 3D bioprinted a functioning human heart pump, of approximately 1.5 centimeters, in a groundbreaking result that could revolutionize the study of heart disease. Results described in Circulation Research demonstrate how pluripotent stem cells, programmed to mature into heart tissues and then 3D printed into the desired structure, were able to achieve critical cell density for functional, pumping action.
